Kâtip Çelebi Ottoman Map and Cultural Exhibition

From October 19 to October 31, 2009, CIMES is going to host the Kâtip Çelebi Ottoman Map and Cultural Exhibition.


Yemen College of Middle Eastern Studies

Summer Session 1 & 2, 2009
Registration for Summer Session 1 & 2 for the Program on Contemporary Middle Eastern Studies is open. Applications will be reviewed based on a rolling admissions process until April 1st for Sessions 1 & 2. The intensive summer sessions at the PCMES include a single intensive academic course, Arabic, and outside field trips, cultural events, and civil society meetings. Students will receive credit for 80 contact hours of intensive Arabic instruction and 50 contact hours from the academic course. All levels of Arabic instruction will be offered, while the Academic course will meet for two hours, three days a week, with an additional lab on Thursdays for site-visits.

  • Summer Session 1 (June 6 – July 9): Tribe, Gender, and Islam in Contemporary Arabia

  • Summer Session 2 (July 12 – August 12): Democratic Reform and Human Rights in the Contemporary Middle East

Dr. Ahmed Saif, Director of the Sheba Center for Strategic Studies, Sana'a, Yemen

Students in this course, in addition to weekly off campus lectures and site-visits, may be able to participate in the August conference of the Project for Middle Eastern Democracy.

PCMES Academic Year 2009-2010
The next academic year of the Program on Contemporary Middle Eastern Studies beginsin August 2009. The PCMES program allows students to take contemporary area studies courses coupled with intensive Arabic language classes. Registration for Fall Semester 2009 has begun and will continue until May 1st, acceptance decisions will be mailed May 10th. YCMES-YALI
The YCMES has integrated its programs for foreigners studying Arabic language and culture with the programs of Yemen's premiere English language institute – YALI. This opportunity has given the YCMES the ability to offer increased cultural integration and language exchange programs for our students, as well as opportunities for native English speakers to teach English to Yemenis. The YCMES is looking to recruit appropriately qualified English-language student interns. Compensation can possibly include r/t transport to Yemen, monthly stipend, room & board, and Arabic lessons. Summer School: Advanced Course in Hadīth Studies

The Centre for Islamic Studies and the Department of Semitic Languages at
the University of Johannesburg are holding a
Summer School course in Advanced Hadīth Studies
13-15 February 2009
Kingsway Campus, University of Johannesburg.

About the Course
The purpose of this course is to provide learners with a concentrated study of
the Hadīth, an important source of Islām. The qualifying learner will build on
their basic knowledge of the methodology, contents, and structure of Hadīth
literature. The focus of this course is to discuss a limited number of themes in
some detail.

Themes:
1. Introduction to Hadith studies
2 Orientalism: The Motzki-Juynboll debate
3. Approaches to the Text: A feminist reading of Hadith text
4. Aqidah: The Shiah and Hadith
5. Classical heritage: Hadith before Bukhari
6. Methodology: Imam Shafi٬ī: Hadith and Sunnah

This is essentially a text-based course, so students should be able to read
and comprehend classical Arabic material. It should be noted that the course
is pegged at NQF Level 6 and a competency in Arabic and an introductory
knowledge of Hadīth at an undergraduate level is a prerequisite. Potential
learners who do not fulfill these admission requirements may, at the discretion
of the Head of Department and after suitable evaluation gain admission on the
strength of that evaluation.
The course is offered by a team of international and local specialists.
While the course is offered as a short course it is also part of the BA Honors
(Semitic Languages and Culture) program.

Assessment
Assessment is by way of assignments, a seminar presentation, and the
submission of a portfolio.

1400-1630
Lunch will be provided.
Costs: R 550-00 (bursaries available).
