The collection was a gift presented to Dr. Ralph Salmi, Director, CIMES by the Istanbul offices of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, Research Center for Islamic History, Art and Culture. The framed collection is a selection of award winning masterpieces of Arabic Calligraphy from around the world.
The framing of the collection was made possible by a grant from the College of Arts and Letters with the support from the Department of World Languages and Literatures.
The smaller displays (8.5 x 11”) are student projects from our Strategic Language Initiative Arabic Language and Culture 2007 Summer program. Students completed their projects in less than 20 hours of instruction, which focused on the principals of Arabic calligraphy. A similar course (ARAB 210) will be offered in the Summer of 2008.
