Financial Support

Cal State San Bernardino (CSUSB) is dedicated to making an MA attainable and affordable. The university offers a variety of financial assistance opportunities to help with graduate tuition and fees. Please visit the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships and Graduate Studies Financial Support for more information.

The Department of Anthropology offers grants to help support student research as well as graduate assistantships to provide additional funds and training for graduate students. In addition, graduate students are introduced to numerous outside funding opportunities targeted towards graduate student research.

Southern California Archaeology Endowment Scholarship

Each year the Anthropology Department offers an ASA – Southern California Archaeology Endowment Scholarship. This is a competitive scholarship offered to graduate students pursuing their thesis research in California. The money is designed to fund any aspect of research including expenses related to travel, field work, specialized material analysis, and analytical testing such as AMS analysis, obsidian hydration/sourcing, and CIEP protein analysis.  Awards are typically provided to a number of graduate students in varying amounts up to $3500.

Graduate Research Assistantships

The Graduate Program in Applied Archaeology offers 1-2 graduate research assistantships each academic year. These positions are typically 10–20 hours per week and provide a salary for research with on-going projects by departmental faculty.

CSU Grant Opportunities

Each year, various organizations offer grants designed to assist CSU students with their research. Our students have received funding from the CSU Council on Ocean Affairs, Science and Technology (COAST) Travel Award Program and the Student Research Support Program. CSUSB also offers a Student Research and Travel Program that provides funding for research related activities, or for travel to present research at conferences.

Outside Grant Opportunities

Calls for proposals to various outside organizations for research funding are provided to the graduate students each year. Organization such as the Society for American Archaeology (SAA) and the Society for California Archaeology (SCA) provide competitive grants and scholarships to graduate students. While there are numerous internal grant opportunities, applying for outside funding is encouraged and faculty members are available to advise on proposal development for these opportunities.
