APRIL 4th -  'The House I Live In' Screening and Discussion

2:00 - 4:00 p.m., Pfau Library (CSUSB Campus) PL-5005From the film distributor, 'The film recognizes drug abuse as a matter of public health, and investigates the tragic errors and shortcomings that have resulted from framing it as an issue for law enforcement. It also examines how political and financial corruption has fueled the war on drugs, despite persistent evidence of its moral, economic, and practical failures. The drug war in America has helped establish the largest prison-industrial system in the world, contributing to the incarceration of 2.3 million men and women and is responsible for untold collateral damage to the lives of countless individuals and families, with a particularly destructive impact on black America.' 

APRIL 11th  - 'Inside/Out: Reflections from a Formerly Incarcerated Prison Educator'

4:00 - 6:00 p.m., SMSU Fourplex (CSUSB Campus). Rooms 215-218Project Rebound and the Center for Study of Correctional Education invite you to a conversation with Dr. Jeri L. Kirby, a formerly incarcerated person and current prison educator. Drawing from her personal and professional experiences, Dr. Kirby will discuss the challenges and importance of education inside and outside the prison walls. Dr. Kirby received her Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from West Virginia University in 2015. She is Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice at Fairmont State University, where she teaches classes in criminology, deviant behavior, the war on drugs, and juvenile justice. She currently serves as the federal prisons coordinator and training facilitator for the Inside Out Center, a program that brings incarcerated students into a seminar setting to study alongside traditional college students. Her previous research has explored neighborhood safety and police relations, correctional policy, and the effectiveness of state criminal punishment policies on prisons, programming, and prisoner re-entry.

In honor of National Volunteer Week, over 700 volunteers come together to serve San Bernardino and the Coachella Valley, including projects aimed to service incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals and at-risk youth 

APRIL 18th - 'Jane Elliot on Race and Racism'

12:00 - 1:30 p.m., SMSU Events Center“Jane Elliot on Race and Racism” is presented by the university’s Institute for Child Development and Family Relations. In 1968, Jane Elliott developed a classroom experiment for her all-white class of third graders to teach them about discrimination and racism by separating those with blue eyes from those with brown eyes. Elliot will show how people can to recognize and identify disparities in the ways in which power is assigned and maintained.
