Master of Arts In Social Sciences & Globalization

"You have to take ownership and leadership of tomorrow. For that to be possible, you have to strengthen your capacity and widen your vision as a global citizen." - Ban Ki-moon, (Eighth UN Secretary-General, 2007-2016)

Do you have a passion to understand yourself and others in the world?  Do you want to know more about how globalization impacts us all around the globe?  Are you interested in getting greater clarity on how globalization impacts everything locally, regionally, nationally, and globally?  Would you like to better understand how social science scholars view globalization through their individual disciplinary lenses?  If so, then the Master of Arts in Social Science and Globalization is the perfect fit for you.

The objective of the Social Sciences and Globalization MA Program at CSUSB is to provide students with a survey of the concepts and ideas social scientists study with emphasis placed upon the domestic and international impact of globalization. While the program provides coursework in the breadth of the social sciences, its emphasis is on History, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, Anthropology, and Geography. This program is especially attractive to those pursuing a career in or seeking advancement in secondary school and community college teaching in the social sciences. Those interested in work in other types of educational and social science-related fields may also benefit from this program.

The program consists of a series of core classes that explores aspects of globalization through the disciplinary lenses of Anthropology, Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, and Sociology.  Additionally, students select from one of the three concentrations in the program to further focus on some topic related to globalization.  The concentrations include the Disciplinary Concentration, the Thematic Concentration, and the Applied Social Science Concentration.

The Disciplinary Concentration allows students to focus their studies on one of the six social science disciplines serving the program (Anthropology, Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, and Sociology).  The Thematic Concentration allows students to focus on one of five pre-established themes including social justice, sustainability, migrations and social movements, global analysis, and conflict and peace studies.  Students can also work with a selected faculty mentor and the MA Program Coordinator to develop additional themes as best serves the students.  The Applied Social Science Concentration allows students to focus on how particular fields of social science can be applied to better understand various aspects of globalization.  There are currently three applied social science tracks including GIS and Spatial Analysis, Public History, and Museum Studies.  Additional applied fields of study are available to students as they develop them with a faculty mentor and the MA Program Coordinator.

The flexibility of the program allows students to focus their graduate studies on a specific aspect of globalization while also receiving more educational training in the social sciences.  Alumni of the program hold leadership roles in local, state, and federal government.  Many alumni of the program currently serve as faculty members in the California community college system and also in the California State University system, including as faculty at CSUSB.
